Akhtamar Set for New Round of Restoration
The Doğan News Agency reports that a second round of restoration work on the Armenian cathedral on the island of Akhtamar is set to start next April.
Structures like the monastery and chapel, which were unearthed during archaeological excavations and supported by sacks filled with rottenstone (also known as tripoli, a fine powdered rock used as a polishing abrasive in woodworking) to prevent destruction, will be restored in six months using hydraulic lime to be brought from Italy, according to the report.
Akhtamar Island will also be outfitted with 24-hour security cameras.
The Holy Cross Armenian church was restored a few years ago and was turned into a “cultural museum” by the Turkish government.
Between 1116 and 1895 Akhtamar Island was the location of the Armenian Catholicosate of Akhtamar.
