Fishy Scheme? Turning Lake Sevan into a Fish Farm?
A few days ago, EcoLur reported that RA Environmental Minister Aram Haroutyunyan favourably commented on the idea of increasing the number of small fish farms in Lake Sevan.
“If these experiments work and is profitable, it will be good if such small fish farms appear in Sevan, not only for nurturing young fish, but also for the breeding of the big fish,” the minister is alleged to have said.
Presently, the Emmi Fruit Company operates a fish farm at Sevan near the town of Shorzha. A portion of the young fish is to be let loose in Sevan, while the others are to be sold.
EcoLur rightly points out that no scientific studies have been carried out to assess whether fish farms will lead to the increased pollution of Sevan resulting from the use of artificial feed containing nitrogen and phosphorus.
Perhaps Minister Haroutyunyan should review international findings regarding the hazards of salmon fish farming in the North Atlantic before giving the green light.
