Step Into My Parlor, Said the Spider to the Fly

By Lucine Kasbarian

In April 2013, the winners of the 4th Annual International Turkish Tourism Cartoon Competition will be announced.

The purpose of the competition is to “examine tourism” in Turkey by highlighting travelers’ experiences from a cartoonist’s point of view. The theme of this year’s competition is “the resident and tourist relationship.”  Tourism is one of the biggest income-generating sectors of the Turkish economy.

Open to professional and amateur cartoonists around the world, the contest will award the winners a one-week vacation for two at a five-star hotel in Turkey.

The competition is co-sponsored by the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the Turkish Association of Tourism Writers and Journalists, the Research Center for Caricature Art at Anadolu University, and the “Anatolia” Journal of Tourism Research.  A representative of the Turkish Ministry of Tourism, Turkish cartoonists, two Turkish tourism journalists, and the editor of “Anatolia” Journal serve as judges.

As a writer and cartoonist of Armenian descent, I am aware of the overtures made by Turkey to encourage tourism by Diasporan Armenians who may be interested in embarking on “nostalgia pilgrimages” to the regions from which their indigenous ancestors were driven during the Turkish government-perpetrated genocide of 1915-1923.  Turkish officials and businessmen alike are clearly eager to derive tourism revenues from what they see as a natural target demographic, namely, the descendants of the forcibly exiled Armenians. After all, the Armenian Highland, now referred to as “Eastern Anatolia” or “Eastern Turkey” and virtually emptied of its Armenian population, is now one of Turkey’s most impoverished regions.

While Turkey desperately wishes to avoid the issue of reparations and restitution for the Armenian Genocide, one wonders whether the Turkish government is nevertheless experiencing cognitive dissonance as it invites Armenians to territory inhabited by their ancestors for more than 3,000 years.   It must take a uniquely wired mind to self-justify the commission of mass murder, property theft and abduction while coaxing the descendants of the victims to cough up money for the “privilege” of touring the lands stolen from their parents, grandparents and forebears.

Turkey’s tourism outreach to Armenians reached unprecedented levels in 2010, after it purportedly “renovated” the 10th century Armenian Holy Cross Cathedral on Aghtamar Island on Lake Van.

Turkey announced that it expected thousands of tourists from Armenia and its Diaspora to spill into the Van region for the ostensibly auspicious opening of a monument that holds great historical, spiritual, and cultural significance for Armenians.  A condition in Turkey’s gesture of “great tolerance” and “largesse” was that Holy Cross would be a house of worship no more, as the structure was to be only a state museum.  Downplayed was the fact that ongoing Christian worship inside the structure would be forbidden.

We could, of course, discuss how unsafe Turkey is, not only to tourists but also to those indigenous groups who have been made to feel like outsiders.  The murder of Armenians -- from journalist Hrant Dink and defenseless old women in Istanbul to visitors in the resort town of Antalya -- are but a few recent examples.

Armenians commemorate April 24 every year because on that day in 1915 the Turkish government rounded up and murdered hundreds of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders.   The purpose was to eliminate the top echelon of the Armenian people and, thereby, to more easily dispose of the masses.

In recent decades, the Turkish government has reserved the month of April to publicly rehabilitate its genocidal reputation.  Each year, Turkish Children’s Day and Turkish Cultural Month strategically commence on April 23rd.  Significantly, the Tourism Cartoon Competition’s exhibition of finalists’ cartoons and its award ceremony are also to be held in April.

As Turkey’s genocide whitewashing campaigns continue unabated, it should come as no surprise that, “coincidentally” this April, the Eurasia Partnership Foundation, its co-sponsor, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and other organizations are bringing about direct passenger flights between Yerevan and Van even as Turkey continues to close its border with Armenia.

The title of this article – derived from the opening line of Mary Howitt’s famous poem – is intended to apply to Turkey’s overtures to tourists.  The line is often used in popular culture to indicate an offer of friendship that is, in fact, a trap.

“Will you walk into my parlor?” said the Spider to the Fly,

'Tis the prettiest little parlor that ever you did spy;

The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,

And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.”

“Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain,

For who goes up your winding stair --

Can ne’er come down again.”

-- Mary Howitt, 1829

RE:  http://hetq.am/eng/news/24953/turkey-officially-freezes-yerevan-van-flights.html As Turkey just officially closed down Yerevan-Van flights, at least this will deny Turkey our Armenian tourist dollars for the chance to tour our own homes and property. We are being shown once again to not trust Turkey's promises, just as in the Protocols.

Dear Lusine, your mention of Eurasia Partnership Foundation is mistaken: it does not have any direct project role in the Van-Yerevan flight. However, even more mistaken is your equation of this planned event with the situation in the poem that you quote. There are major groups in Armenia and Turkey which support this action as a breakthrough in the situation of closed borders. I will be happy to provide you with more information and my vision on this, if you contact me directly, e.g. via facebook (I do not want to provide my contact details here publicly), or writing to [email protected] . Gevorg Ter-Gabrielyan, Country Director of EPF

Are all the articles wrong that mention Eurasia Parnership Foundation's role in the Van-Yerevan flights? How many of the Van tour operators belong to the Turkish-Armenian Business Development Council (TABDC, an arm of the Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission)? If Armenians are to go to Western Armenia, would it not be smart to do so with a game plan in place? At this time, the gesture only shows that we are ready to drive Turkey's economy and that we can let bygones be bygones. An article in Al Jazeera reports that chess instruction is now mandatory in Armenian schools. It is too bad that comprehensive Armenian history instruction is not.

Dear MK, It would be good to have a full name to know who am I referring to. You can get the information about EPF and TABDC project from the following site: http://armturkdialogue.net/ As you can see, the USAID-sponsored project is over. However, it was indeed thanks to that project that the foundations were laid for the flight, but the flight itself has nothing to do with EPF any more. If you study the site more thoroughly, you will learn that tens of thousands of citizens of Armenia are going to Turkey every year, many of them as illegal migrants... that there is a trade between Turkey and Armenia of several hundred million USD annually... That the trip on a bus from Yerevan to Kars via the two borders of Georgia takes around 14 hours... You will learn that tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people in Turkey get to know about their past, their history, and recognize the Genocide of the Armenian people as something that took place in their country a century ago... And the amount of thos ewho are conscious of the past but are looking forward grows, also thanks to the projects like SATR and like this planned flight... You should be proud that many Armenians will have a chance to easier visit the places of residence of their ancestors... and that they can trade and accumulate at least some subsistence in order to be able to address all their issues with their neighbors... Please visit Armenia, get in touch with people here, and you will see a very different picture... The game plan is being built incessantly daily by several good will players, but it is not a geopolitical real politik kind of game plan, the types of which are being hijacked by those who want to stop the development of Armenia for their private benefit... This is a game plan of international development, dialogue, and advance... Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission is a thing of past, however, it was thanks to it, in particular, that Armenian citizens can get a visa on the border with Turkey, and vice versa... and that an international independent institute on justice made a statement on what did happen in 1915, a statement which was asked for by Turks and Armenians together... On chess: I agree, there is no need for that game in school, but then I have several critiques about Armenian government. On history: unfortunately children are being tought history too much, and too superficially, in antedeluvian ways... so they learn stereotypes rather than learn to think... Please don't worry, inhabitants of Armenia are no less patriots than you, and they are cautious enough, and they do not all agree on one thing. But the Van Yerevan flight, if it happens, will be an important, though small step in the right direction.

I myself have little or no trust in organizations in Armenia that are funded by foreign governments, including governments in NATO. That's because the West and NATO are not interested in justice for the Armenian people. Rather, the West is interested in busting into the region using Turkey, and is solely interested in oil and gas pipelines, dragging Armenia away from its regional friends, and planting the NATO flag in the area. Part of this plan is to run roughshod over Armenia and Artsakh in order to further link up Turkey to Azerbaijan. Then it's on to the Caspian and Central Asia. Pan-Turkism. Are organizations such as the Eurasia Partnership Foundation even vaguely aware of these plans, Mr. Ter-Gabrielyan, or does it not care?
gevorg
Dear Taline, I would assume that you live in one of those NATO countries, so you can direct your inquiries to the government that you are paying taxes to. The question you ask is similar to asking somebody: do you say thank you if you have to express gratefulness? It is one of those embarrassing questions that even asking is not always appropriate. Of course people in Armenia study the situation and make their conclusions. Moreover, the plans that you mention, in the way you construct them, are a typical example of conspiracy theory. In the similar vein, the Diaspora can be blamed for initiating the conflict in Karabakh, and for not enriching Armenia in the 20 years since then, so that Armenia is still so empoverished and unhappy. Please be assured that Armenia is an independent sovereign country, and Armenian organizations are not slaves to those who, based on mutual consent, provide them money for their ideas, and instead of transmitting conspirology, please study more what is going on and help if you can with deeds rather than distract attention with empty conspiratorial cliches. Without knowing me or without knowing much of EPF or any other such organizations, you are expressing mistrust. Well, such prejudices make discussions quite pointless, don't they
Taline
Dear Gevork: Please spend my tax money well as it helps to pay your salary. Maybe use some of it to buy some nice Turkish souvenirs to bring home with you the next time you visit eastern Turkey.
Raffi
Vartan,I am in total agreement with you regarding EPF,an arm of US POLICY in the region at the expense of Armenia.
C.K. Garabed
Just remember that the originator of a strong political cartoon is pro-active, whereas commentators are reactive.
Mihran
Morally bankrupt policies are being carried out through soft power by the US in Armenia visa via Turkey and one of the vehicles used to carry out these projects is EPF. The reason is Crystal clear and that is to forget the the Armenian genocide and the follow up consequences that go with it.
