Turkish Court Rules Death of Armenian Private an Accident

On Tuesday, a Turkish court ruled that the 2011 death of Sevag Şahin Balıkçı, an Armenian private serving in the Turkish army, was an accident.

The man who shot him, Kıvanç Ağaoğlu, was sentenced to four years and five months imprisonment.

After deducting time already served, Ağaoğlu will spend an additional three years behind bars.

Pvt. Balıkçı was killed on April 24, 2011, a day symbolizing the launch of the 1915 Genocide.

Balıkçı’s family and lawyers believe that his being Armenian might have been a motive for the fatal shooting.
