Mosque by Architect Sinan Makes UNESCO List
On June 27, the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne (Turkey) was one of the 25 new inscriptions added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Most scholars claim that Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, who built the mosque between 1568 and 1574, was of Armenian heritage and conscripted into Ottoman service via the devshirme system.
The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II and was built by architect Mimar Sinan. It was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture.
