Stop the Custom’s Agreement from Being Signed with Moscow

By Christian Garbis

Armenian citizens should not allow the customs agreement to be signed with Russia.

Joining a still-abstract Customs Union, with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan confirmed onboard, is a disaster in the making and would the worst thing the Armenian republic ever did in its 22 year history. It would be tantamount to entering a screeching time vortex and landing in the dark ages, complete with the classic communist slogans pasted across the city walls and statues being re-erected glorifying the days of the Soviet dream. Putin’s dream is to bring it all back, under a different guise, but all the same associated nonsense.

After 4 years of negotiations with the EU on signing the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, which would have entered its final phase with a formal signing ceremony in November, one man’s abrupt decision should not lock Armenia’s fate and compromise its long-term sustainability and prospects for expanding growth. The Armenian people themselves must decide their own future, not someone who places his own personal interests over those of the people he is supposedly serving.

Well, you are correct. However, there are factors you are not taking into consideration. First of all, Armenia's neighbors aren't exactly Switzerland and Austria. We have two neighbors whose policy is to wipe Armenia off the map. Azerbaijan is a Nazi-like state who's official policy is demonization of the Armenian nation, much like Nazi Germany regarding Jews. Turkey is backing Azerbaijan in it's pursuits, closing the border to starve out Armenia, and denying its bloody past. In 1993, according to Greek embassy official documents, Turkey intended to invade Armenia in support of Azerbaijan. The only factor that kept Turkey at bay was Russia--sleep on that.

Patriot, you are correct. And we should sleep on that. But what do we realise when we wake? In my opinion it demonstrates our incredible weakness geopolitically and economically as a state. We are always forced to take the least worst option. And this is a continuous slide until we will one day take the option of jumping off the plank rather than being pushed off the plank. The suffocation which you correctly describe demonstrates that we MUST GET OUT OF THIS SITUATION. And for me this means at all levels. This means our government should be one which is looking for better options, this means our businesses must invest to support a strong government which is not the servant of corruption, and this means the Armenian people in and outside of Armenia who must take up the decision whether they want Armenia to be a fairytale nation within 50 years (i.e. one that does not exist). It is always easier to blame the next, the people can blame the economy, the business the governmetn and the government the external factors. However we should be honest with ourselves and see what we can do ourselves FIRST and Secondly what we can do to facilitate OTHERS who want to help in the strengthening of this nation, be it by investing in the country, adding to it culturally, those who wish to start charitable organisations for the socially vunerable. Of course there are those who take advantage of those who wish to work hard and honestly for the benefit of themselves and the country, but at some point a MASS can be created who realize that there is one direction to SAVE this nation and that is by the solving of our nations problems OURSELVES. If history has taught us one thing is that nobody cares about us. And they will only care about us when we force them to, on our terms.
