Gerard Cafesjian (1925 - 2013)

American-Armenian businessman and philanthropist Gerard Cafesjian died today at the age of 88.

Probably best known for investing millions into turning the crumbling Cascade site in Yerevan into a much loved park and home of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, Gerard Cafesjian generously donated to a number of Armenian organizations and charities including the Armenian Fund, AGBU and the Armenian Assembly of America.

Born in 1925 in New York City to immigrant Armenian parents fleeing Ottoman persecution, Cafesjian graduated from St John’s University Law School and then went on to make his mark in the publishing world.

He became the Executive Vice-President at West Publishing, only retiring in 1996 when the firm was sold.

In 2000, Cafesjian received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
