Catholicos Garegin on Sanahin - "I have nothing to do with churches or monasteries in the mountains"
According to a statement issued by the group "We Will Not Remain Silent", Samvel Karapetyan, who heads the Armenian Architecture Institute, recently asked Catholicos Garegin II if it wasn't possible to allocate a tiny portion of the money the Armenian Church uses to build new churches to improving conditions at the Sanahin Monastery.
The group claims that Karapetyan, in an interview with the Arm Info news website, stated that Catholicos Garegin II responded by saying – I have nothing to do with monasteries or churches up in the mountains.
"Logically, the church should be the first one to be concerned with the plight of religious structures. I won't even mention government agencies that should be interested to see that tress do not grow on the domes of churches," Karapetyan is to have said in the interview.
The Sanahin Monastery, a World Heritage site, has been in the news recently after the civic group released pictures showing shrubs and small trees growing on the church walls and dome.
