Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Yanovych Azarov has submitted his resignation.

In a statement today on the Ukraine government website, Azarov says he is ready to step down in order to encourage a social-political compromise and preserve the unity of the country.

Azarov's statement was released as the parliament opened a special session that is expected to repeal harsh anti-protest laws that were imposed this month.
