No Smoke from Alaverdi's Copper Smelter
Today, no white plums could be seen emanating from the smokestacks at the Alaverdi Copper Smelting Plant. When asked if this meant that the facility was no longer being operated, Andranik Ghambaryan, who heads the Public Affairs Division at the Armenian Copper Programme (ACP), responded that, "A mishap has occured at the smelter. The roof atop the ovens has fallen in, leading to a temporary shut down for repair work. If the smelter isn't back up by today, it will be by tomorrow evening." He added that there was no danger of toxic exhausts escaping as a result of the accident.
