Some 1,000 Citizens of Armenia in Los Angeles Jails

On August 8, Grigor Hovhannisyan, RA Chief Consul in Los Angeles, again visited citizens of Armenia incarcerated in local jails.

Consul Hovhannisyan stated that according to statistics provided by Los Angeles law enforcement, the number of RA citizens now behind bars in Los Angeles municipal jails is not more than 1,000.

The consul argues that rumours regarding thousands of Armenians being jailed in Los Angeles are pure exaggeration.

Consul Hovhannisyan was accompanied by Raffi Ohanyan, a deacon of the Armenian Apostolic Church, who also visits incarcerated RA citizens.

According to official stats, the number of RA citizens who have violated their visa stipulations and are now facing deportation has recently been on the rise.

The RA Foreign Ministry says that so far this year, U.S. authorities have reported 50 deportation cases to the consulate in Los Angeles.
