The RoA Presidential Press Service reports that on the evening of February 26, President Serzh Sargsyan hosted His Holiness Garegin II, Catholicos of All Armenians and members of the Supreme Spiritual Council of the Holy See. President Sargsyan noted that the last time he met with such a delegation was days after the consecration of the Holy Myuron and that he was once again pleased to host such an august delegation and that he was ready to continue the discussion regarding cooperation between the church and state and other matters of mutual interest. The Armenian president noted with satisfaction that cooperation between the Holy See and the government was growing stronger with each passing day and that this should be the case. "This is not connected to any specific time period. It is the on-going mission of the church and the government. The two have the responsibility to supplement one another," President Sargsyan noted, adding that, "In the stage when our society is still taking shape such relations take on added importance." Catholicos Garegin II noted that expanded sessions of the Supreme Spiritual Council take place twice a year at the Holy See of Etchmiadzin and that at the current session a host of issues were on the agenda including organizational issues regarding internal church life, relations with sister churches, manifestations surfacing in the national life of the people, etc. An interesting discussion took place regarding issues of concern for high-ranking clergymen. In particular, mention was made of the proposed holiday of "National Identity" now being debated by the National Assembly. Also discussed were the problems confronting the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, the issue of reinforcing the sense of national identity in those Armenians, both in Armenia and the Diaspora, that have converted or belong to other religious faiths and followings and strengthening relations between Etchmiadzin and Armenian communities professing other religious faiths. Catholicos Garegin II welcomed the initiative displayed by President Sargsyan regarding issues of national import and the consideration he has shown towards issues of concern to the church.
