Heritage Party Calls on Supporters to Back Opposition Ticket for Mayor

After talks between the Heritage Party and Levon Ter-Petrosyan's Armenian National Congress (HAK) broke down over drafting a joint ticket for the upcomin May municipal elections for Yerevan City Council posts that would ultimately decide who would become the next mayor of Yerevan, Heritage has declared that it would not contest the elections on its own. Rather it has called on its supporters to back the nominees of the opposition, stating the elections are a crucial step in restoring justice and the rule of law in the country as a whole. The public declaration by Heritage also confessed that it lamented the fact that the two oppositional forces couldn't agree on a united ticket and that given the present situation one had to bow out, leaving the field uncontested for the other. The Heritage Party noted that it would mobilize all its forces to guarantee that the May 31 elections would take place in an atmosphere of calm and to avert any possible fraud or tampering of the vote count.
