RoA Deputy FM: “An open border will benefit both Armenia and Turkey”
On the eve of the May 7 "European Partnership" summit to be held in Prague, RoA Deputy Foreign Minister Karineh Ghazinyan told reporters today that Turkey has also expressed an interest in the summit but that it was still unclear if Turkey might somehow participate as well.
While in Prague to participate in the European Partnership summit, RoA President Serzh Sargsyan is scheduled to to meet with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan.
Also attending the summit will be the leaders of Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus. The leaders of al six nations are expected to sign a document ushering the official launch of the European Union's "Eastern Partnership" program.
The Armenian Deputy FM stated that what is expected out of the Prague summit is a quick resolution of the Karabakh conflict and the normalization of relations with Armenia's western neighbor without any preconditions leading to an end to the blockade, opening of the border and the establishment of diplomatic relations.
In her words, "The opening of the last closed border in Europe would be beneficial to both Armenia and Turkey."
Mrs. Ghazinyan stated, "Taking into account Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, where the eastern border is yet undefined and as to when it will be opened, negotiations are underway to establish normal relations with both of our neigbors as quickly as possible."
She added that it wasn't right for Armenia to remain isolated and constricted.
