ARF MP Calls Current Election Cycle Typically Flawed

ARF parliamentary faction member Lilit Galstyan has described the current election campaign for Yerevan City Council as a repeat of previous flawed elections replete with bribe-giving, illegal lists of residents and the full use of administrative, material and criminal resources. The ARF MP made her comments at a press conference held today. Mrs. Galstyan noted that when she uses the term "election bribes" she doesn't mean the 5,000 or 10,000 handed out to voters. "From election to election, the name of a political party is pasted on the walls of buildings and people congregate, drink beer and play backgammon. These clubs are a form of election bribe since a mind-set is created that jobs are being created for certain people during each election cycle. We know of school principals who have been threatened into coming up with lists of the school staff. Other voters are given promises of garage space and property," said Mrs. Galstyan. Based on her observations she concluded that this upcoming election wouldn't be free and fair either. "In a true democracy, ones ballot decides your political rating, attraction and confidence level. But in Armenia, the vote tallies reported by the Central Electoral Commission never expresses the true worthiness or strength of this or that political force," stated the ARF MP. She noted that the public must understand that by only thinking of short-term personal gains, they are endangering their next four years as residents of Yerevan. Mrs. Galstyan said that nominees included on the tickets of certain parties serve as negative propaganda for those parties. "District leaders on the tickets of certain parties are going around meeting with neighborhood people and our promising that they'll turn Yerevan into a veritable paradise; a clean, green and beautiful capital. These people shouldn't be assuming such responsibilities once again but rather should be held account for what they have already done to Yerevan."
