Governments of Armenia, NKR Must Do More to Improve Plight of Refugees
The Armenian Refugees and International Rights Network, NGO, has issued a statement critical of the Armenian government's handling of the plight faced by the hundreds of thousands of Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan.
The statement says that the recent visit to Armenia of John Greenway, the PACE Committee Rapporteur on Migration, Refugees and Population, offered the authorities in Armenia yet another opportunity to reaffirm the claim of the Armenian government regarding refugees. The statement seriously questions the government’s claim that the issue of integrating Armenians from Azerbaijan into society head essentially been resolved and that the only outstanding issue was of providing them adequate housing.
The statement also points out that the RoA Foreign Ministry downplayed the importance of the issue of Armenian refugees in the context of a settlement of the Azerbaijan-Artsakh conflict. Moreover, an official at the RoA Foreign Ministry said that the issue is raised solely to politicize the issue.
The statement reminds that Armenian government that talking about the violated rights of close to one half million Armenian refugees, rather than being a political ploy, is the obligation of the authorities in Armenia and Karabakh.
The statement goes on to say that, sadly both Armenia and the NKR have shirked their duties in this regard. This has led to tens of thousands of refugees to flee Armenia while those who remain continue to live in a terrible situation that is both demeaning and insecure.
