HAK Rules Out Any Cooperation With Regime As Long As "One" Political Prisoner Remains

At a press conference held today HAK representative Davit Shahnazaryan, when asked by reporters what relations would be like if both opposition and ruling party candidates were voted into the Yerevan City Council, answered, "Given today's reality, the representation of coalition forces in the Council will be quite small." Mr. Shahnazaryan added that if election fraud is to be the decisive factor that any possibility of cooperation between the opposing camps is quite negligible. "One side is looking to hold on to power and the capability of committing crimes and extortion, while we are looking to put an end to all that, " the HAK representative said. Mr. Shahnazaryan stated that the possibilities to cooperate rested with President Sargsyan. "As long as there is one political prisoner, any dialogue, let alone cooperation, is out of the question." When asked by "Hetq" what would the relationship be between the Municipal Council and other state government bodies if HAK won the election and Levon Ter-Petrosyan became Yerevan mayor, Mr. Shahnazaryan said, "The rule of law will be implemented in Yerevan and the minority-led government will not be able to prevent this in the Municipal Council." In his opinion, if the rule of law were to be established in Yerevan it would signal the end of this regime. "This criminal regime has no flexibility to withstand a loss in one sphere of government. This regime is based on lies and deceit."
