President Sargsyan - I'll Declare Amnesty if Popular Will Exists

president-sardarapat_2805During President Serzh Sargsyan's visit to Sardarapat on May 28 to commemorate the founding of the first Republic of Armenia, the head of state answered a few questions posed by reporters. He was specifically asked about possible plans to declare a general amnesty. Mr. President, in your address to the nation today you called for the opening of a new page to ensure the unity of society. In this context, are you planning to exercise your constitutional right to declare a general amnesty? The last time an amnesty was declared in our republic was in 2006. If within the past three years the notion and need to declare an amnesty has taken hold within our society, then I am ready to exercise my constitutional right to do so. Thus, I call on all political forces, civil leaders and the public council to forward their proposals and conditions to the presidential palace. If it turns out that such a desire exists within the society then I will immediately exercise my right and apply to the national assembly. Mr. President, the political campaign leading to the Yerevan municipal elections is drawing to a close. How would you evaluate the campaign and what message would you like to impart regarding the process? I regard the process as normal and positive. I'd say that all the contending political forces had an equal chance to get their message across to the people. I am glad that the opposing camps employed a host of various campaign techniques to publicize their views to the electorate. I would urge the political forces to continue in this same vein and not create undue tension in the next few days. The process should end on a positive note with the May 31 election. In this context, our people and the international community will be justified in saying that we are on the right track and that the May 31 municipal elections have been the best to date.
