Artists Come to Defense of Young Environmental Activist

A group of Armenian artists have issued a public statement expressing "their deep dismay" regarding the criminal charges levied against Mariam Soukhudyan, a young environmental activist recently charged with the crime of "false denunciation". They sent their protest to the RoA President, Prime Minister, United Nations Human Rights Defender and representatives of the European Council. The artists state that Ms. Soukhudyan is the latest innocent victim to be unlawfully charged by the Armenian court system. The artists express their concerns for the future plight of the country's citizens and state that today, in Armenia, everyone's safety and security is threatened. They argue that Mariam Soukhudyan has been targeted merely because she raised the plight of vulnerable children and that anyone who speaks out for justice in Armenia can wind up in a similar situation. In summation, the artists declare that the case must be reexamined and that those truly guilty must be brought to justice. Those signing the statement - Nanor Petrosyan, Hasmik Simonyan, Anahit Hayrapetyan, Gagik Ghazareh, Arpi Voskanyan, Narineh Avetyan, Vahram Akimyan, Lousineh Mirzoyan, Tigran Khachatryan, Marianna Vardanyan, Mikayel Mkrtchyan.
