Heritage Party Claims Authorities Waging “Crusade” Against Its MP’s

The Heritage Party publicly declared today that a political crusade waged by Armenian authorities against its core MP’s, especially Zaruhi Postanjyan, has reached its most intensive level ever and that there have been demands for the party to cease functioning. The party singles out incidents where the police have illegally prevented its MP’s, youth activists and other NGO’s from staging public protests against the Armenian-Turkish Protocols and complains that legal action hasn’t been taken against those who violate free speech and assembly laws. The Heritage Party statement also notes that calls by Zaruhi Postanjyan for the courts to hold accountable certain newspapers that have slandered her character and reputation have been regularly denied. As further proof of this crusade against its members, Heritage points to the arbitrary and deliberate move on the part of the government to deprive MP’s Larisa Alaverdyan and Zaruhi Postanjyan from Armenia’s delegations to PACE and the OSCE. The statement says that by doing so, the government is engaged in a cynical attempt to restrict the rights and liberties of the party’s members who number in the hundreds of thousands. The statement concludes by assuring it members and supporters that it will continue it political and legal struggle against the Protocols, the Madrid Principles and for the establishment of a truly free and strong Armenia.
