Life Sentence for Murdering Armenian-American Businessman Berberian

Today, Nork-Marash districts court led by judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan sentenced Petros Temiryan and Karen Dallakyan to life in prison for murdering Armenian American businessman Nazareth Hagop Berberian. The third person charged with the murder is still at large, although, as Ashot Karapetian, Head of Kentron Division of the Police Department, assured Hetq months ago, he has been unable to cross the Armenian border.

A separate case has been instituted for the third criminal currently at large. Petros Temiryan, one of the defendants, was a friend of the Armenian American businessman. Temiryan was arrested days after the murder and subsequently showed the place where Nazareth Berberian was buried. Karen Dallakyan, the other defendant, was caught months later in Moscow. A friend of Petros, Karen didn't know Nazareth Berberian personally. Nazareth Berberian, 57, a U.S. citizen, Head of Lil-Nar LLC, left his apartment on April 25, 2009 and never returned. His vehicle was found in the parking lot of Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan. About 20 days later, the police recovered his body 25.5 km from Yerevan buried in a ditch near Yerevan-Sevan highway. Nazareth Berberian was murdered by strangling and injection of ketamine. The criminals transported his body to a ditch by the Yerevan-Sevan highway in the victim's car, which was afterwards taken to the Zvartnots Airport to create an impression that Berberian had left the country.

The car was in a working condition, there was no sign of robbery; even the alarm was on. Judge Martirosyan found the defendants guilty of committing the murder of Nazareth Berberian as an organized group with the intention of stealing large amount of property (Article 104, Part 2, 7th and 8th clues, as well as Article 175, Part 3, the 1st and 3rd clues of the Armenian Criminal Code).

Nazareth Berberian had moved from Yerevan to the United States with his family in early 1970s. His family, including his wife, children and his sister, lives in the United States. Berberian owns a shopping mall in Los Angeles, CA. He moved back to Yerevan in mid-1990s, built a rug factory in the village of Dalar, Ararat marz. He was doing charity both in Armenia and Artsakh. Near the end of his life, Nazareth Berberian made up his mind to embark on a large business project.

This unfinished hotel rising 200 meters to the north-east of the Republic Square in Yerevan, at the intersection of Abovian and Pushkin, belonged to Nazareth Berberian. With the construction of this hotel, Berberian was planning to create a tourist zone. There were supposed to be souvenir stores on the first and the second floors of the building. Besides that, the hotel residents were going to be given an opportunity to visit and tour the rug factory in Dalar, become familiar with the hand-woven production and purchase not only regular rugs and carpets but also their miniaturized counterparts as souvenirs. In various parts of Armenia Berberian was looking for antique rugs and carpets with the intention of furnishing and designing his rug factory and the hotel. According to some sources, the international financial crisis had created difficulties for Berberian. He was negotiating with two companies that have international hotel chains with the expectation of attracting investments. It is difficult to say anything about the outcome of those negotiations, since Nazareth was not very talkative about his future plan. Today, the destiny of the hotel is unknown.
