Hnchak Party Blasts Bill to Modify “Language Law”

Lyudmila Sargsyan, Chairwoman of the Social Democrat Hnchak Party in Armenia, pointed to the defeat of a draft bill regarding modifying the "Language Law" in Armenia as the most urgent problem facing the country today. At a press conference, Chairman Sargsyan argued that the proposed modifications were clearly aimed to facilitate the opening of foreign language schools and that she got the impression that the rulung regime had no conception of the dangers involved. She then made a historical reference to the early 20th century when Russian overlords were targeted for assassination by certain Armenian political parties because they mandated Russian language schools in the provinces. Chairman Sargsyan said that such an attitude by the authorities towards the language, a symbol of an independent nation, merely proves that Armenia’s independence and future is of no value to this government. The Social Democrat Hnchak Party has minced no words by labeling such plans as "national treason."
