Excerpts from a Press Release by the Office of the Prosecutor General On 25 March this year, President Serzh Sargsyan signed a decree on the military conscription from April to June 2010 of male citizens aged 18 years and those below 27 whose deferrals had expired.  The Police Service of Armenia has numerous cases pending of citizens who face criminal charges for avoiding military conscription or alternative service, based on part 1 of article 327 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Armenia has issued a directive to marz and village prosecutors, whereby citizens of Armenia who face criminal charges for avoiding military service will see those charges dropped if they voluntarily present themselves to the police of military commissioners and express the desire to serve in the Armenian armed forces.  This also applies to those with dual citizenship, who are recognized by the Republic of Armenia as being citizens of the Republic of Armenia only. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Armenia asks all citizens identified as conscripts who are currently in hiding to use the given opportunity and fulfill their constitutional duty towards their motherland and their people, liberate themselves from the status of a criminal on the run and to bear the calling of being a citizen and a soldier of Armenia with pride. We also ask parents to support their children in returning to Armenia from foreign lands, free them of the denigrating feeling of being in hiding and facilitate their future physical and mental development, so that those young men can then live on Armenian soil with dignity, after completing their military service with honor.
