President Sargsyan: Redouble Efforts on March 1st Inquiry

At a consultative session today designed to discuss judicial/legal reforms, President Serzh Sargsyan urged top officials representaing Armenia's law enforcement sector to redouble their efforts into an investigation of the events of March 1, 2008.

To date no one has been criminally charged with the deaths of eight civilians and two law enforcement personnel during the post-election civil unrest that rocked the Armenian capital three years ago.

"I know all the issues and objective problems that all of us, law enforcement bodies, have had in this regard. Perhaps no one is more aware of these problems than I. But I must again stress the importance of the matter for our country and society and in order to avoid the issue being exploited. Go back and re-examine all sides of the events with a fine tooth comb. Maybe there are eye witnesses that didn’t want to cooperate with law enforcement at the time and now they just might," President Sargsyan noted.

Present at the session were RA Prosecutor Beneral Aghvan Hovsepyan, Justice Minister Hrayr Tovmasyan, Court of Cassation President Arman Mkrtoumyan, Court of Cassation Criminal Chamber President Davit Avetisyan and representatives from several investigative agencies.
