President Sargsyan Decides Not to Attend Lisbon NATO Summit
Summit Declaration Omits Principle of "Self-Determination"
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan declared earlier this evening that he would not be attending the NATO Summit in Lisbon as scheduled on November 20. President Sargsyan was to participate in a meeting of leaders from nations contributing to NATO security forces in Afghanistan.
According to an official press release, President Sargsyan decided to pull out at the last minute due to the retention of a general formulation in the Summit’s draft declaration regarding conflicts in the south Caucasus that makes reference to only one of the principles as stipulated by the OSCE Minsk Group – that of territorial integrity.
President Sargsyan’s statement says that such an omission can turn into a negative impulse and can create additional complications for the negotiations process aiming for the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
The statement ends by saying that Armenia’s Foreign and Defense Ministers will attend in place of President Sargsyan.
