Environmentalists have demanded that the RA Ministry of Nature Protection halt the illegal operation of “Gegamet Plus” in the Lake Sevan basin.
“Gegamet Plus” submitted for consideration to the State Environmental Expert Group of the Ministry of Nature Protection of RA, an environmental impact assessment of a project on crashing and sorting dunite- periodite raw material from the Shorzha Mine located at the Sevan basin.
Public hearings on this project were held in Shorzha Village (Gegharkounik Region) on December 1st. It should be mentioned that the company already submitted a similar project for expert assessment which was rejected as it violated Article 10 of RA "Law On Lake Sevan” banning ore processing activities in Sevan basin.
As a matter of fact, nothing has changed in the new project:
Crushing of chromites poses danger for the drainage basin of Sevan, as chromium is classified as heavy elements with first toxicity class. Any production will result in dust accumulating in Sevan basin, spread and accumulation of elements in the ecosystem disturbing vital cycles of these elements.
Provisions of main laws are violated such as RA Laws “On Lake Sevan”, “On Specially Protected Territories”, “On Preservation of Flora”, “On Preservation of Fauna”, the Water Code of Armenia, as well as international conventions such the UN Convention On Biological Diversity, and the European Landscape Convention.
The hearings held were a kind of show as the main stakeholders didn’t participate, such as Sevan National Park and the State Environmental Inspectorate of Nature Protection Ministry of Armenia.
The State Environmental Inspectorate must have submitted a report on an ore-processing enterprise illegally operating in Sevan Lake basin, as Nature Protection Ministry received warnings about this many times.
We , the undersigned, urge the Ministry to regard the public hearings as null and void and to conduct an urgent examination of “Gegamet Plus” Company by the State Environmental Inspectorate and to stop the illegal operation at Sevan.
