7% of Armenia's Children Subject to Physical Violence
Naira Harutyunyan, a psychologist working at P.S. 127 in Yerevan, stated today that she estimates that 7% of Armenia’s children are subject to some type of physical violence. She categorizes the violence as either physical or psychological and claims that the latter is much harder to quantify, especially in Armenia. This type occurs when a child is neglected, their demands aren’t taken into account, which can lead to aggressive behaviour.
Psychologist Mariam Mehrabyan, who heads the Psychological Services Center at the Yerevan Pedagogical Institute, says that such aggression can often be directed to other children who are weaker and younger. Oftentimes, it can lead to alcoholism as well. She cited the example adopted by Sweden tin terms of prevention where the sale of war-related toys has been banned.
