Thousands Throng to Gyumri to Welcome Pope Francis

Thousands travelled to Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city, to welcome Pope Francis and to hear him celebrate the Divine Liturgy in the city center.

Preliminary estimates place the crowd at 30,000, many of whom had received special invitations to enter the square and see the celebration in person.

Those without such invitations had to watch the ceremony on TV screens in the cafes that surround Vardanants Square.

Seating in the square, in front of the stage, could accommodate 1,500; mostly foreign guests, the disabled, and dignitaries.

The municipality had also installed a few large screens in the center of Gyumri so that those without invitations could follow the religious ceremony.
