Gyumri Police Defend Detention of Jailed Activist's Teenage Son Prior to Pope Francis Liturgy

Gyumri police have declared that they had every right to detain Shahen Haroutyunyan, the teenage son of jailed political activist Shant Haroutyunyan, after he was spotted concealing something under his shirt in Vardanants Square today before the scheduled Divine Liturgy to be celebrated by visiting Pope Francis.

“Taking into account his previous hooliganism and numerous instances of disrespecting the police, the police demanding that he remove himself to a reasonable distance from the ceremony,” reads the police statement.

The report says that Shahen Haroutyunyan refused to heed the instructions of the police and was thus charged with violating public order.
