A young refugee gets an apartment

As we reported earlier, the sixteen-year-old orphan, Badal Harutiunyan, a refugee from Azerbaijan wound up on the streets because of a wrongful decision issued by Felix Yayloyan, then mayor of the Arabkir district of Yerevan. By a decision of the Arabkir District Council, the Harutiunyan's 99.3 square-meter basement apartment at 50 Baghramyan Avenue had been handed over to FSG Concern, CJSC, owned by Yayloyan's deputy, F. Sargisyan.

When Tim Straight, Country Director of the Norwegian Refugee Council, and Norwegian Honorary Consul to Armenia, read our articles about the young refugee, he decided to get involved. Straight agreed to solve the boy's housing problem through the Norwegian Refugee Council, and provided us with $6,500 to buy Badal a one-room apartment in Yerevan. But in recent months, the cost of apartments has risen sharply, and $6,500 was no longer enough for a one-room apartment in Yerevan. Parliament members Armen Mkhitaryan and Manvel Yeghiazaryan decided to join in helping the boy, and provided us with $300 each. We were then able to buy a one-room apartment for Badal Harutiunyan for $7,000 in the 4 th Nor Nork district of Yerevan.

We would like to thank all those who helped us to find and buy the apartment for Badal.

In a month, Badal Harutiunyan will turn 18. At that point, he will be able to go to court to defend his rights, being of legal age. Until then, we are assisting Badal in preparing all the necessary papers, so that he can register a formal complaint with the Court of First Instance of the Arabkir District against former mayor of Arabkir, Felix Yayloyan.
