Armenian Delegation Meets with President Sarkozy Re: Genocide Denial Bill

A delegation from the Armenian community in France met with President Sarkozy on Saturday to discuss the upcoming Senate debate regarding a bill to penalize denial of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

Sarkozy told representatives of the CCAF (Co-ordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France) that, "the government will leave the Senate free to determine its vote, without instruction by the presidential majority."

On Wednesday, May 4, the French Senate will debate the bill, submitted by the Socialist Party.

Despite the support of a majority of the Socialist party, communists and some senators of the UMP, the French government may block the adoption of the bill.

On May 4, Armenians will stage a demonstration in front of the French Senate.
