Drinking and Irrigation Water Issues in Armenia: Almost Nothing Done in a Year

Around 580 settlements in Armenia have drinking water issues, according to the data of the RA State Water Committee. Some of them do not have drinking water at all, some use artesian or deep wells, some have springs, but there is no water supply network at all or it just doesn’t operate.

In the summer of 2017, Water Committee Chairman Arsen Harutyunyantold Hetq that 270-300 million euros were needed to solve issues step by step, to be co-financed by the government, Veolia Jour operator, communities and foreign donors.

Last month, Hetq sent a written inquiry to Mr. Harutyunyan, asking about any progress.

Head of the Staff of the State Water Committee Mikayel Makinyan sent a reply, stating that in 2013-2014, German CES Company carried out feasibility studies for the improvement and development of water supply and drainage systems in Armenia's rural communities, as requested by the Committee, and published a report that includes required investments, technical suggestions for improvement of water supply and drainage systems, operation costs and other recommendations for each residential area.

Makinyan says the report served as a basis for starting water and drainage improvement project in six settlements, located in Lori, Kotayk, Armavir and Gegharkounik Provinces.

In fact, surveys and plans for improvement of drinking water coverage in only six settlements have been the only steps taken.

When Yelk Alliance MP Lena Nazaryan, raised the issue with the Minister of Territorial Administration and Development David Lokyan in 2017, the latter said that by the end of 2020, about one quarter of 580 communities (145 communities) would have their water issue solved.

Hetq addressed the issue of drinking water in Tlik village in Aragatsotn Province several times.

Apparently, this village is not among the lists of those communities where there are improvements planned for the near future.
