Armenian Parliament to Convene Special Session on Taping of Private Phone Conversations

Armenian Parliament President Ara Babloyan today announced that at least one-quarter of the 105 sitting MPs have talked to him about convening a special session regarding the secretly taped phone conversation between National Security Service Chief Artur Vanetsyan and Specual Investigative Service Chief Suren Khachatryan.

“At least one-quarter of all MPs have contacted me about forming an examing committee to investigate the prevention of justice, the right to a fair trial, and the violation of secrecy of telephone conversations. A special session will be held, at the initiative of the MPs, immediately after the next sessions,” Babloyan said.

In the phone conversation, published on September 11, Vanetsyan and Khachatryan are heard discussing the detention of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and the ongoing investigation of the events of March 1, 2008.

Yesterday, Babloyan described publication of the secretly taped phone conversation as “deeply troubling and unprecedented.”
