Thousands March in Istanbul to Mark 5th Anniversary of Hrant Dink’s Murder
In Istanbul, tens of thousands took to the street on Thursday to mark the fifth anniversary of the murder Hrant Dink and to protest a Tuesday court ruling that there was no conspiracy, provoking national and international criticism.
"We want justice for Hrant", “ "We all are Armenians”, the marchers shouted as they wound their way through the center of Istanbul to the offices of the Turkish-Armenian newspaper Agos, which Dink once edited.
It was the biggest demonstration for democracy and human rights that Turkey has seen in years.
On Tuesday, a court convicted a man for instigating the murder, but acquitted 19 people on state conspiracy charges
The protest marked the day five years ago when Hrant Dink, a Turkish-Armenian writer and newspaper editor, was gunned down in broad daylight by a 17-year-old ultranationalist.
Toward the end of the march, a group of young protesters threw stones at a couple of shop windows and ATM machines and skirmished with the police. The demonstration was otherwise peaceful.
The last time such a large human-rights demonstration took place in Turkey was on the day of Hrant Dink's funeral, when an estimated 100,000 walked from the murder scene to the cemetery where he was buried.
