Armenian President Asks Constitutional Court to Review Controversial Parliamentary Procedural Bill
Armenian President Armen Sarkissian will ask the Constitutional Court to review a controversial bill, passed by the parliament on October 2 allowing for a change in the legislature’s procedural code.
67 MPs from the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Prosperous Armenia and the ARF voted in favor of the bill. Only Yelk Alliance MPs voted against the bill.
Then Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan blasted the bill as an attempt by his opponents to hinder the dissolution of the current parliament and delaying snap parliamentary elections.
Upon learning about the bill, Pashinyan consulted with the parliamentary president and the leader of the RPA faction, urging that the bill be recalled.
Pashinyan then went on TV, calling on citizens to protest outside the National Assembly if the bill was passed. Thousands took to the streets in Yerevan in response.
Sarkissian’s office released a statement today saying that the president would ask the court to rule on the constitutionality of the bill.
