Appeals Court Overturns Decision to Arrest Head of March 1, 2008 Investigative Group

Armenia’s Court of Appeals today overturned a lower court’s decision to arrest Vahagn Harutunyan charged with falsifying evidence when he chaired a special government group investigating the March 2008 post-election protests in Yerevan.

The country’s Special Investigative Service petitioned the lower court to arrest Harutyunyan, now in Moscow for medical treatment, for covering up evidence that army units were dispatched to Yerevan and that they fired on protesters.

Harutyunyan has labelled the charges as “illegal”, adding that he has informed the SIS of his whereabouts.
