Armenia and Artsakh: Military Personnel Deaths Drop 17% in 2018
There were 63 reported deaths of military personnel within the Armenian Army and the Artsakh Defense Army in 2018, a drop of 17% from 2017, this according to Armenia’s State Prosecutor’s Office.
The deaths, by service classification, are as follows: Draftees (27), Contract Soldiers (23), Officers (11), Junior Officers (2).
38 of the deaths were a result of military service and the remaining 25 had nothing to do with military service.
11 deaths were suicides
7 resulted from enemy fire
6 resulted from military service traffic accidents
3 resulted from illness (non-specified)
3 resulted from unforeseen tragedies
2 resulted from improper weapons handling
2 resulted from violation of military conduct protocol
2 resulted from violation of flight rules
1 resulted from a mine ordinance explosion
1 was a murder
Eleven of the non-military related deaths were from traffic accidents. Ten were the result of illnesses and four were from unforeseen tragedies.
