Armenian Parliament Passes Controversial 1,000 AMD "Soldier Tax" Bill

By a vote of 102 to 3, Armenia’s parliament today approved a government sponsored bill that would obligate employed citizens to pay 1,000 AMD (US$2.10) per month to fund greater assistance to soldiers disabled in the line of duty and to families of soldiers killed.

The plan to additionally tax workers to fund greater assistance to soldiers and their families has led to many opposing the plan, arguing that the government should take effectual steps to curb corruption and mismanagement of taxpayer funds.

Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, sponsor of the controversial bill, argued that the government didn’t have the funds to increase compensation to soldiers and that a new revenue source was needed.

Soldiers killed or maimed prior to the bill becoming law, will not be covered.
