Malishka Mayor Charged with Embezzlement and Electoral Fraud

Armenian police have charged Malishka Mayor Mher Movsisyan with embezzlement and distributing election bribes.

Police claim that during the April 2017 parliamentary elections Movsisyan received 13 million drams in cash from candidate Ashot Arsenyan. Movsisyan was told to use the money to buy 1,300 votes for Arsenyan.

Movsisyan has also been charged with pocketing 410,000 drams that he officially recorded as being allocated to families in social need.

Movisyan and his son, the director of Malishka’s sports school, have been charged with hiring the mayor’s wife as a nurse at the school in January 2016 and paying her a salary of 2.1 million drams even though she never showed up for work.

Malishka is a rural community of some 4,500 in Armenia's Vayots Dzor province.
