Former Head of National Security Council Questioned about March 1, 2008 Yerevan Crackdown

Armenia’s Special Investigative Service yesterday interviewed Armen Gevorgyan in conjunction with the ongoing investigation of the March 1-2, 2008 public protests in Yerevan that claimed the lives of ten individuals.

Gevorgyan served as secretary of the National Security Council from June 2007 to April 2008.

The SIS confirmed the news with Hetq, but did not say whether Gevorgyan was interviewed as a witness or possible suspect in the case.

The SIS has already charged several officials, including former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and ex-deputy defense minister Yuri Khachatryan, of “usurping state power” at the time of widespread demonstrations in the Armenian capital following the February 2008 presidential election that resulted in Serzh Sargsyan replacing the outgoing Robert Kocharyan.
