Armenia Wants to Strengthen CSTO, Says Government Official

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Spokesman Tigran Balayan says that the Armenian government recently requested that Yuri Khachatryan be replaced as CSTO Secretary General in order that the Russia-led security body not be discredited.

Yuri Khachatryan, a former Armenian deputy defense minister, has been charged with “usurping state power” in March 2008.

Balayan says the Armenian government wants to strengthen the Collective Security Treaty Organization and that Khachatryan, now under detention in Yerevan, should be replaced.

“Armenia will not take any step that would damage the reputation of CSTO. It is in our interest that CSTO continues its work uninterrupted,” says Balayan.
