Armenia Importing More Cars; German Brands Lead the Way

Armenia’s State Revenue Commission data shows 41,100 automobiles were imported into Armenia in 2013; a rise of 18% over 2012.

It comes close to the record of 41,900 vehicles imported in 2008.

The increase, however, was mostly in cars worth $5,000 USD or less. 62% of the cars imported fell in this category. In 2008 the number was 25%, and 59% in 2012.

Germany is the main supplier of cars to Armenia; 22,000 in 2013. This figure includes cars shipped directly from Germany as well as from Georgia. The SRC doesn’t provide a break-down.

Germany provides Armenia with less expensive autos, mostly the Opel brand. There is a high demand for them for use as taxis. They are bought up quickly, mostly at a price of $5,000. A large number of Mercedes and BMW automobiles are also imported, but these are usually older editions.

Japanese models are in less demand. In 2013, some 8,000 Japanese cars were imported at an average customs value of $9,000. They are mostly sold at auction. The fact that the steering wheel is located on the right makes them less attractive, however.

South Korea is also a major supplier with some 1,000 autos being imported annually. The average customs value is $10,000.

American made cars are still in demand in Armenia. 1,800 were imported in 2013 with an average value of $12,000.

Russian imports total around 2,000 per year at an average value of $4,000. After Armenia joins the Customs Union, the number of Russian car imports is expected to grow.
