HAK Representative: Armenia Must Respond to Davutoglu’s “Impertinent” Remarks

17_03-v_karapetyanVladimir Karapetyan, a representative of the HAK (Armenian National Congress) Foreign Affairs Committee, stated at a press conference today that the recently signed Armenian-Turkish protocols were poorly negotiated and would lead to a number of serious challenges for the nation.Mr. Karapetyan stated that he didn’t believe that the Turkish parliament would ratify the protocols and that, consequently, the border between the two countries wouldn’t be opened any time soon. He added that HAK had yet to review the issue of circumventing the recognition of the Treaty of Kars. "However, we find unacceptable those provisions dealing with the creation of an historical commission that will result in the denial of the Armenian Genocide," noted Mr. Karapetyan. Commenting on Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s remarks yesterday in the Turkish parliament, Mr. Karapetyan said that HAK found it insulting for the foreign minister to make such remarks just days after he signed the protocols and spoke about establishing normal relations with Armenia. "I believe it wasn’t proper for a neighbouring country," he noted and argued that Armenia must immediately respond in kind. Mr. Karapetyan stated that it was the flaws in the protocols that allowed Turkish officials to make such caustic remarks. "If the protocols were a normal document, such statements and working methods wouldn’t be possible. We have given Turkey this possibility." When asked why HAK hasn’t teamed up with the ARF to oppose the ratification of the protocols, Mr. Karapetyan said the answer was "on the table". "It is due to the contradictions between the positions of HAK and the ARF. Other than the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan, we do not see any alternative of freeing ourselves from these dangerous developments. The ARF is not making such a demand. Their approach is different." Mr. Karapetyan wouldn’t say when HAK would organize its next public demonstration, claiming that the organization didn’t think now was the right time to get its message across via a public assembly. He said that despite the news blackout imposed on HAK by the T.V. stations, the opposition group has been able to get its message across to the public via other means.
