Former RA Prime Minister - Schools Must Remain Armenian Language

Former RA Prime Minister Hrant Bagratyan, at a press conference held today where he took the current government to task regarding its economic policies during the financial crisis, also lambasted the government’s plan to allow foreign language schools in the country. Mr. Bagratyan said he wanted to especially single out the Minister of Education and a "certain female MP" of the Prosperous Armenia Party for criticism. He noted that the MP in question said the other day that, "If you want a good education, then get ready for the foreign languages to arrive." "It’s as if the Armenian language is to blame for the poor education system in the country. Sure, certain reforms are need in the language but Armenian, with its value status, is rated quite high," Mr. Bagratyan said. The former PM alluded to the fact that Byron studied Armenian because the poet considered it a language bestowed by God. "Byron said, I am a poet, a man of words. When I hear a language, its structure, rhyme and mode of conveyance, I understand its perfection." " I would like to tell the Education Minister and the female MP to get their act together. In the final analysis, is it the language that is stopping you from getting a good education?", Mr. Bagratyan exclaimed, adding that local schools should be allowed to more intensively delve into foreign languages, Russian, English and French, but that the general language of instruction must remain Armenian.
