“The European Union must Support Karabakh, Armenia and Azerbaijan”

Ashot Grigoryan, the President of the Forum of Armenian Unions in Europe and František Mikloško, Member of the Slovakian National Council have suggested that the European Union should give Armenia, the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan the status of associate EU members.  This would mean the flow of billions of dollars to these three republics. “In our opinion, the Nagorno-Karabakh issue is a vital one for the European Union and Europe; it is a question of the whole future of Europe.  Europe is a large chain, but it can only be strong if each of its links is equally strong.  The Nagorno-Karabakh issue is its weakest link,” said František Mikloško. Through the support of the European Union Armenia, Karabakh and Azerbaijan could undergo rapid reform and then become EU candidate countries, after which they could become member states.  The probably timeline for this process would be 10-15 years. František Mikloško said that they would do all they could to raise this issue in the European Union.  Ashot Grigoryan, the President of the Forum of Armenian Unions, would also like to see Georga, Abkhazia and South Ossetia included in this program. Ashot Grigoryan stated that he had discussed this issue with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan, but did not receive much of a reaction from him, while the President and Speaker of National Assembly in the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh had listened attentively and were positive about the program.
