Newspaper Charges Police Chief with Pursuing “Personal Vendetta” Against Reporters

Anna Hakobyan, Director of the "Haykakan Zhamanak" newspaper, publicly stated at a press conference today that the recent arrest of reporter Ani Gevorgyan might stem from the fact that the police chief has a personal grudge against the reporter for unfavorable articles she has written about him. "It is not in every country that the police chief can arrest a reporter just because he finds certain articles distasteful," said Ms. Hakobyan. She pointed to two recent articles by Ani Gevorgyan in which the reporter stated that the official hymn of the police was quite similar to a Georgian song. The paper’s director said that Police Chief Alik Sargsyan was barking up the wrong tree if he believed that he could exact personal revenge against a reporter or a newspaper for articles published and that "serious consequences await him down the road." Hayk Gevorgyan, the newspaper’s print run manager, said that the paper was up against "an illegal band of thugs that had assumed the name of the official police". "None of the families of the arrested reporters, Ani Gevorgyan, Suzanna Poghosyan and "Hayk" reporter Lilit Tadevosyan, nor the other two young people arrested, were ever informed by the police that such steps had been taken, even though required by law to do so," said Mr. Hayk Gevorgyan. Anna Hakobyan said that while the police were employing illegal means to obstruct the activities of reporters, the paper would use the power of the pen to fight back. "We will see which weapon is the strongest in this struggle," she said. Reporter Ani Hakobyan remains in police custody and is being kept in a room by herself. The paper’s director said that roses had been sent to the young reporter and the entire staff was behind her in support and that they will "stick by her side" in this ordeal.
