Armenian MPs Won't Go on Election Observation Mission to Syria

Presidential elections will be held in Syria on June 3.

Syria's parliamentary speaker invited the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia (RA) to send an observation mission to the presidential election.

On May 24, Hetq asked RA National Assembly President Galust Sahakyan (pictured) whether his Syrian counterpart's invitation will be accepted. In response, Sahakyan said that the presence of an Armenian observer group in a warring country won't have any significance.

"I think, the presence of our observers there won't have any significance, but if there will be wishes [to go], naturally… It's just that we believe we have to be able to support the Armenian community in more serious ways," he said.

Asked whether there is a final decision to accept or reject the invitation, the Armenian parliamentary speaker didn't provide a clear answer. "Naturally, it's not a question of accepting or not accepting. I don't think that observers will have any significance in a warring country. But if it's necessary, [if] we feel that our observers will contribute to something, naturally, we'll go."

Hetq also sent a question in writing to determine whether a delegation will be sent to Syria or not. Staff from the National Assembly public relations department informed Hetq today that an invitation from Syria's parliament was received: though a parliamentary delegation won't be going, an agreement was reached that if necessary, employees of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in the Syrian Arab Republic will carry out an observer mission.
