Prosperous Armenia MP Warns Government of Serious Implications If It Allows Social Tensions to Rise

Secretary of the Prosperous Armenia Party parliamentary faction and a member of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs Aragats Akhoyan warns that if the ruling authorities continue to exacerbate the current social tension, it will have serious implications for them.

Speaking to Hetq and addressing the rise in electricity rates, which led to a protest demonstration yesterdaythat resulted in more than 20 people being detained by police, Akhoyan said: "Whether the situation will exacerbate after this or not.. all rivers emerge from small streams — let the authorities think about the consequences of this."

The Member of Parliament said that he is opposed to any price increase.

"I am against the price increase of not only electricity, but also everything. Life is gradually becoming more expensive before our [very] eyes; we don't understand — what will come of this?" he said.

Asked whether the disproportionate actions of the police at yesterday's demonstration aimed to dispel the signs of exacerbation, Akhoyan said he didn't follow yesterday's events closely, so he can't provide a clear assessment.

"I didn't watch closely, but I am against any [type of] violence because it's not from being in a good situation that people go to protest demonstrations and rallies. I can't say after which oint police officers intervened, what they did, whether the public order was breached or not, that police officers intervened. I'm not familiar with the course of action, so I can't say," he said.
