Rule of Law Rally to Focus on Social Issues, Says Party Leader

Artur Baghdasaryan, president of the Rule of Law party in Armenia, told reporters today that a demonstration it has scheduled for July 18 in Yerevan will focus on reversing the recent electricity consumer rate hike approved by the Public Services Regulatory Commission.

Baghdasrayn added that while his party is organizing the public rally, it is opened to all political forces.

He was quick to point out that there would be overt political demands made at the rally, for example the resignation of the president, and that the focus would be on resolving the myriad social ills facing Armenia.

Seemingly skirting around the issue, Baghdasaryan said that President Sargsyan couldn’t run for a third term under the constitution and that, in any event, Sargsyan has stated that he has no desire to become prime minister.

“Thus, whether you want it or not, we will have a new president,” Bagdasaryan told reporters, adding that he didn’t rule out snap parliamentary elections.

Baghdasaryan argued that the current make-up of Armenia’s parliament, with five parties in opposition (he includes the Rule of Law in this camp) and one in the majority, makes it hard to pass legislation.
