Rule of Law Prez: 'We Had No Connection to the Bloodshed of March 1, 2008'

Rule of Law Party President Artur Baghdasaryan went out of his way today to stress to reporters that his party should also been seen as an opposition force in Armenia.

To this end, Baghdasaryan told reporters that his party was periodically cooperating with the so-called opposition quartet (HAK, Heritage, ARF, and Prosperous Armenia) in the parliament.

“We have declared that we are ready to collaborate with all on specific issues and problems. We have no hang-ups and are cooperation is visible. There are issues that are of concern for us all; the quartet and Rule of Law. Thus, we are ready to coordinate our energies. In a way, the quartet is in fact a quintet,” Baghdasaryan told reporters, but confessed that neither his party nor the quartet had discussed expanding the four party opposition bloc to five.

Baghdasaryan said the quartet’s 12 point list of demands made to the government was acceptable, but chided the parties for not taking steps towards achieving them.

He gave the example that when the quartet protests against the recent rise in consume electricity rates, Rule of Law raises the issue at the administrative court, and noted the public rally organized for July 18 in Yerevan.

When asked about his possible candidacy in the 2018 presidential election, Baghdasaryan answered that anything was possible and that time would tell if he’d throw his hat into the ring.

Confessing that his party had made mistakes while it was a junior partner in the ruling government coalition, Baghdasaryan said he wished to apologize to the public, but stressed that the party’s decision to enter the coalition in 2008 had nothing to do with the public protests on March 1, 2008 in which ten people were killed and scores injured.

“That was linked to the behavior of the authorities. The Rule of Law party and I have done nothing for which we should hang our head in shame. We had nothing to do with the bloodshed and looting that ensued,” Baghdasaryan said.
